Hand Pain, Numbness, and Tingling Treatment
Hand pain, and especially numbness or tingling, can affect every aspect of one’s daily life. The simplest tasks can be a challenge due to constant achy or shooting pains in the wrist or into the fingers. Maybe you can’t feel what you’re touching, grabbing, or holding. Sometimes you’ll inexplicably drop a coffee cup due to muscle weakness. It’s an extremely maddening condition.
What Causes Pain, Numbness, or Tingling in the Wrist or Hand?
Pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness are all typically caused by irritation or generally some type of compromise to the normal function of the nerves in the hand.
The cause can be in the wrist or hand itself, and more commonly from nerve irritation of the nerve roots exiting the lower neck. This is why the vast majority of carpal tunnel syndrome surgeries are a failure. It may partially help, but rarely is it the whole answer. The medical journals call this scenario “The Double Crush Syndrome” – meaning the nerve may be affected at the spinal nerve root that travels into the hand, the nerve in the wrist may be compressed, or both.
The nerves are often affected by misalignments in the spine, arms, or wrist, or disc problems in the spine.
How Do We Evaluate Pain, Numbness, or Tingling in the Wrist or Hand?
The secret to successful treatment of this condition is to fully evaluate every joint along the course of the nerves into the hand, where the nerves may be impeded. This is what we do at Vivify Chiropractic, and why we see so many patients with this condition get their lives back in short order.
What Do We Do To Treat Pain, Numbness, or Tingling in the Wrist or Hand?
Based on the exam findings regarding where the nerves are being compromised, we may address the joint function of the spine or upper extremities joints using our hands or instruments, as well as prescribe specific corrective rehab stretches and exercises.
